Source Extraction Representing Thumb and Little Finger Cortical Networks and Intra-Hand-Area Evoked Synchrony

چکیده
A novel cerebral source extraction method is proposed (Functional Source Separation, FSS) starting from extra-cephalic magnetoencephalographic (MEG) signals in humans, based on source functional reactivity to the external stimulation. Their activity is obtained all along the rest state and during processing of a simple separate sensory stimuli of thumb or little finger. This method provides cerebral sources describing thumb and little finger primary representations, as demonstrated by their higher responsiveness to the corresponding finger stimuli and their different positions consistent with the homuncular organization. A dynamical index describing intra-regional synchrony was introduced, which showed higher levels when stimulating the thumb with respect to little finger stimulation, selectively in the gamma band ([33, 44]Hz). This indicates that the stimulation of a functionally prevalent finger (thumb) activates a cortical network more synchronized in the gamma band than a nonprevalent one (little finger).

EEG Oscillations Are Modulated in Different Behavior-Related Networks during Rhythmic Finger Movements.
Sequencing and timing of body movements are essential to perform motoric tasks. In this study, we investigate the temporal relation between cortical oscillations and human motor behavior (i.e., rhythmic finger movements). High-density EEG recordings were used for source imaging based on individual anatomy. We separated sustained and movement phase-related EEG source amplitudes based on the actu...
متن کاملThe influence of hand posture on corticospinal excitability during motor imagery: a transcranial magnetic stimulation study.
In order to study the interaction between proprioceptive information and motor imagery, we herein investigate how compatible and incompatible postural signals influence corticospinal excitability during the mental simulation of hand movements. Subjects were asked to imagine themselves joining the tips of the thumb and the little finger while they maintained one of the two following hand posture...

The control of whole hand grasping relies on complex coordination of multiple forces. While many studies have characterized the coordination of finger forces and torques, the control of hand muscle activity underlying multi-digit grasping has not been studied to the same extent. Motor unit synchrony across finger muscles or muscle compartments might be one of the factors underlying the limited ...

An early component of the somatosensory evoked potential, arising from the primary sensory cortex in man is attenuated during voluntary finger movement. The median nerve at the wrist was stimulated while the subject performed fractionated finger movements with the same hand. Subcortical components of the somatosensory evoked potential were not changed but the P25 cortical component was attenuat...
